Right whales set new record May 5, 2006

The southern right whales (Eubaleana Australis) has set a new record for the earliest annual sighting of the Victorian coast. Southern right whales make their annual migrations to Australian and New Zealand waters for every winter and spring. The whales usually arrive in Australian waters during mid May, but this year they are surprisingly early. Right whales migrate southwest for the summer to the colder, food-rich waters around Australia and Antarctica. For the rest of the year, they hangout around Africa and South America. Not much is know about the migratory habits of southern right whales, so the information is hazy.
